How to Check a Company's Official Careers Page Before You Apply

Why this check is so effective

Most job scams work by keeping you inside a conversation the scammer controls: their message, their link, their phone number. The company's own careers page is outside that bubble. A scammer can copy a logo and write a convincing offer, but they cannot add a fake job to a real company's website. That is why comparing an offer against the company's own page is the strongest single check you can make.

Step 1: Find the official website yourself

Do not use a link from the message that contacted you. Search for the company's name and open the main website from the results. Then check a few basics:

• The web address is the company's real one, not a near match with an extra word or changed letters.
• The site loads over a secure connection and looks maintained, with real content, an address and contact details.
• The social media links on the site lead to accounts that link back to it.

Be careful if several companies have similar names. Confirm you have the right one by matching the location, the business and any registration details against what the recruiter told you.

Step 2: Find the careers page

Most companies place a "Careers", "Jobs" or "Join us" link in the top menu or the footer of the main site. Reaching the careers page from there means you are on the company's real page. Many companies use a third-party hiring platform for applications, and that is normal, as long as the link comes from the company's own site.

Step 3: Confirm the specific role

Search the careers page for the role you were offered or applied for. Compare the job title, the location, the responsibilities and the requirements with what you were told. A genuine opening usually matches closely. If the company shows a reference number or job ID, check that it matches the one in your message.

What if the role is not listed?

Do not assume it is fake, and do not assume it is real. Companies sometimes hire through campus drives, employee referrals or recruitment agencies without posting a role publicly, and listings can lag behind reality. But an absence is a reason to ask before you proceed:

• Email or call the company's HR or careers contact, found on its official website, and ask whether the role and the recruiter are genuine.
• If an agency contacted you, ask which company the role is for and confirm with that company directly.
• Until you have a confirmation, share no documents and pay nothing.

How to spot a fake careers portal

Scammers build convincing copies of company career sites. Warning signs include:

• A lookalike address. The domain differs slightly from the company's official one, or is a generic address that merely mentions the company's name.
• A payment step. Any "registration", "verification" or "processing" fee is a red flag. Genuine employers do not charge to apply.
• Requests for sensitive data too early. A form that asks for bank details, card information or an OTP at application stage is not a normal application.
• Little real content. No company history, no leadership, no address, and stock images with a copied logo.
• A recent, hidden or unusual registration. A domain lookup service can show when a website address was registered. A brand-new address claiming to be a long-established company is suspicious.
• Contact only through chat apps. A portal with no email or phone number, pushing you to a private chat.
