How to Get a Job With No Experience as a Fresher in India

By Your Job Mitra Team · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer

You get a job with no experience by replacing years of experience with proof of ability. Pick roles that accept freshers, build one or two real projects or complete an internship, show them clearly on a targeted resume, and apply through referrals as well as job boards. Employers hiring freshers expect to train you; they need evidence you can learn quickly.

Key facts

  • Employers who hire freshers are hiring potential, so your task is to prove you can learn quickly.
  • One finished, well-explained project is worth more than a long list of course certificates.
  • Roles listed as '0-1 years' or 'freshers welcome' are your realistic targets; start there.
  • A referral, or a short direct message to someone on the team, often works better than a cold application.
  • A smaller number of tailored applications usually beats a large number of identical ones.

What "no experience" really means to an employer

When a company opens a fresher role, it already knows you have not worked in the field. It is not looking for a track record. It is trying to answer a different question: if we train this person, will it work out? Everything in your application should help them say yes to that question.

That reframes the problem. You are not trying to disguise a lack of experience. You are trying to show, with evidence, that you learn quickly, finish what you start, and can explain your own work. That evidence can be built in a few weeks.

Step 1: Aim at roles that accept freshers

Applying to roles that want three years of experience wastes your effort. Look for listings that say "0-1 years", "freshers welcome", "trainee", "graduate trainee", "associate" or "junior". Roles with structured onboarding, such as customer support, technical support, inside sales, operations and junior developer positions, tend to have more entry-level openings, though this varies by city and season.

Choose one or two target roles and stay with them for a month. Applying to everything makes it impossible to tailor your resume, and tailoring is what gets you shortlisted. If you are unsure where to aim, our overview of the best jobs for freshers compares the main options, and what fresher jobs are explains how to read the listings.

Step 2: Build proof of ability

Proof is anything a stranger can look at and conclude you can do the work. Pick the forms that fit your target role:

ProofWhat it showsHow to present it
A projectYou can build something end to endOne to three lines on your resume plus a link to the code or a working demo
An internshipYou have worked in a team on real tasksRole, duration, and what you specifically delivered
A certificationYou finished structured learningOnly if you can explain what you learned and use it in a project
College or volunteer roleResponsibility and communicationWhat you organised, how many people, and the outcome
Freelance or part-time workYou can deliver for a clientThe task, the tools, and the result

Two rules make proof credible. First, finish it: a small project that works beats an ambitious one that does not. Second, be able to explain every part: interviewers will ask why you made each choice, and an answer you cannot give undoes the value of the project.

Be careful with internships that ask you to pay. A genuine internship pays a stipend or is unpaid, but it does not charge you. See whether you should ever pay money for a job before you hand over a rupee.

Step 3: Show the proof on your resume

With no work history, projects and skills move to the top of the page and do the job that "experience" normally does. Write each project as what you built, with which tools, and what it does. Our step-by-step guide on how to make a resume with no experience shows the wording, and the free Resume Builder lays it out in an ATS-friendly format. Once it is done, run it through the ATS Score Checker to catch formatting problems before an employer's software does.

What if the listing asks for one or two years of experience?

Requirements in a job listing are often a wish list rather than a hard filter, particularly for junior roles. If a listing asks for "0-2 years" or "1 year preferred", and you meet most of the core skills, applying is reasonable. If it asks for "3+ years" or a senior title, it is not aimed at you.

Whatever you decide, never claim experience you do not have. Interviews for junior roles test fundamentals directly, and a made-up claim is easy to expose. Describe what you have really done, and describe it well.

Step 4: Use referrals and direct outreach

Many fresher roles are filled partly through people who already know someone at the company. You do not need a close contact. Alumni from your college, seniors, and people who post about their team on LinkedIn are all reasonable people to write to, as long as your message is short and specific.

Hi Priya, I'm a 2026 BCA graduate from XYZ College and I saw your team is hiring a junior QA engineer. I've built a small test-automation project in Python and Selenium (link below). Would you be open to telling me what your team looks for in freshers, or pointing me to the right person?

Do not ask a stranger to "get you a job". Ask for a small piece of information, attach evidence, and thank them whatever the reply. Many will not answer; a few will, and that is enough.

Step 5: Apply in a way that improves your odds

  • Tailor the top of your resume to each role: the summary and the first few skills should match what the listing asks for, using only skills you genuinely have.
  • Apply through the company's own page when you can, and check that the role is real first. Read how to verify a job offer.
  • Keep a simple tracker of where you applied, on what date, and what happened. It stops you re-applying and shows you which version of your resume gets replies.
  • Prepare as you apply. Interview practice should start before the first call, not after it. Start with how to answer "tell me about yourself".

A four-week plan

WeekFocusWhat you should have at the end
1Choose one or two target roles; read 15 to 20 listings and note the repeated skillsA short list of the skills that actually appear
2Start or finish one project that uses those skillsA working project you can demo and explain
3Build the resume and write two or three referral messagesA one-page resume and messages ready to send
4Apply to well-matched roles, send messages, practise interviewsA tracker with applications and follow-ups

Repeat weeks 3 and 4 while your projects grow. For a fuller day-by-day plan, see how to get your first job after graduation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sending the same resume to every role without adjusting it.
  • Listing every tool you have heard of instead of the ones you can discuss.
  • Collecting certificates without building anything with what they taught.
  • Paying anyone for a "guaranteed" job or internship.
  • Waiting until you feel fully ready. Most people never do, and employers know it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a job with no experience and no internship?

Yes. Employers hiring freshers accept other proof: a finished project, a strong college result, a relevant certification you can explain, or volunteer and freelance work. Without an internship you simply need to work harder to make that proof visible on your resume and in interviews.

Should I lie about experience to get shortlisted?

No. Fresher interviews test fundamentals directly, so invented experience is easy to expose, and a false claim can cost you an offer or a job after you join. Describe your real projects and skills as strongly and specifically as you honestly can.

Are online certificates enough to get hired?

Rarely on their own. A certificate shows you finished a course; employers want to see you can use the skill. Pair each certificate with a project you built and can explain, and list only the ones relevant to the role you are applying for.

Which jobs are easiest to get with no experience?

Roles with structured on-the-job training, such as customer support, technical support, inside sales, operations and junior developer positions, tend to have more entry-level openings. 'Easiest' depends on your city, skills and the season, so check current listings rather than assuming.

How long does it take to get a first job?

There is no reliable number. It depends on your field, city, skills and how targeted your applications are. Building proof and tailoring your applications for a few weeks improves your position; do not trust anyone who promises a fixed timeline or a guaranteed job.
